The series gets a serious makeover.The litmus test for any game that is part of a long running sports series is to measure how it stands up against previous efforts. When you compare EA Sports’ FIFA 2000 to FIFA 2001, what you have are two wildly different games that are similar only in that they deal with the same subject matter. Simply put, this is a whole new ballgame.The difference rests in the how the game plays on the pitch. The pace is more realistic, thanks in part to the fact that you can finally choose to slow things down. The series has needed a “slow” game speed setting for years, and its effect is immediately noticeable. The pitch itself is much larger, too,giving you more space to set up plays and to survey the landscape before committing to a maneuver.

The pinball-like gameplay of years past is replaced with a much better brand of football. It’s not going to pass as an exact replica for what you see on ESPN, but it’s the best portrayal of the series in years.The defensive AI is very tight. In FIFA 2000, it was fairly easy to weave through the computer defenders. Here, marking is much improved, and on the highest level of difficulty you are forced to work for each and every quality shot you take. The computer is also much better at tackling and stealing the ball from attackers.

It takes a highly skilled striker or forward (such as Owen or Bergkamp) to take on more than one defender and come out unscathed, and even the best players rarely accomplish such a feat. It’s simply one of the tougher FIFA games you’ll play, and amateurs will need some time to get adjusted.EA Sports continues to improve the visual quality of its games and FIFA 2001 is no exception to that rule. It’s easy to forget that FIFA 2000 limited the resolution that you could play at, but this version allows resolutions over 1024×768, and it certainly shows. The animation is more realistic, and the pitch itself looks extremely crisp. The shadows are truly amazing—when you play a day game, the shadows from the towers overhead loom over the field.

This sets the atmosphere to a level never before achieved in a soccer game.There are a few issues, however. It’s impossible to custom configure your gamepad—you are stuck with the default control settings. Another pre-game oddity is that you cannot play a 12 or 14 minute half. You can set the clock to four, six, eight, ten, 20, or 45 minutes. A 12-minute half would be ideal as ten isn’t quite long enough and 20 or 45 are marathon games.The computer coaches never, ever use substitutions unless a player gets injured; fatigue isn’t reason enough for the computer to make use of its bench. There is still no trade AI in the game. If your squad has the cash, it can buy any player in any league.

Need a great offensive player? Does your team have money burning a hole in its pocket?

Give Arsenal a call and buy Dennis Bergkamp. It’s just that easy. It would also be nice if the game provided more post game stats other than goals scored and bookings.

Who racked up the most tackles? Who won the most key headers?

Which player passed the ball most effectively?The offensive AI could use a bit of work. Most goals scored by the computer are due to great individual efforts rather than beautiful passing and playmaking. Finally, the speed burst effect lasts way too long (it would be nice if you could fine-tune this as you could in NHL 2001). Good players have the ability to run at full speed up and down the pitch without breathing heavy.The audio, a feature that North American gamers complained about extensively last year, is back on par with the return of British commentator John Motson. The failed experiment of having American MLS announcers provide the play-by-play last year is hopefully one that will never again be repeated, and it shows that the developers at EA Sports listened to feedback.

Motson’s commentary is not the only good aspect of the game’s audio. The players themselves are vocal this year; they yell, grunt when tackled, and generally make quite a racket.

This can really be heard if you (shudder the thought) disable Motson’s commentary. The fans also get into the flow of the game, and cheer and boo at the right time and really let out a moan when a hard sliding tackle isn’t whistled as a free kick.Quibbles aside, this is a solid title. Little things about the game’s overall presentation help add to the experience. You can finally enable player names to appear below each player on the pitch, and this makes is so much easier to tell who is who.

The game is loaded with modest and subtle changes like this that end up adding a lot to the game. If arcade soccer is your forte, then FIFA 2001 is a must try. EA Play is joining Xbox Game Pass for free. Alongside the launch date and pricing reveal for Xbox Series X, Microsoft announced that EA Play — EA's games subscription service, earlier known as EA Access / Origin Access — will now be included at no additional cost with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and Xbox Game Pass for PC. That means Ultimate members get access to EA Play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Windows 10, while Xbox Game Pass for PC members get EA Play on Windows 10. The complimentary EA Play subscription with Xbox Game Pass will be available in “holiday 2020”.

This means EA's biggest franchises — FIFA, Titanfall, Need for Speed, Battlefield, Mass Effect, The Sims, Skate, and Madden NFL — will be available on Xbox Game Pass in a few months, making Microsoft's subscription a better deal than before. In India, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs Rs. 699 per month, while Xbox Game Pass for PC (Beta) comes in at Rs. 329 per month. The latter is now a terrific deal for PC gamers, given EA Play itself costs Rs. 315 per month.

Those who pay for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will also get access to EA titles on their Android devices via Xbox Game Streaming, available September 15 in select markets. India is not part of the initial cloud rollout.

An EA Play subscription offers other benefits too. Mind you, it's not the same as an EA Play Pro subscription that includes unlimited access to select new EA titles. With EA Play, new launches take nearly a year or more to show up.

EA has been trying to expand access to its subscription service. It recently arrived on Steam at the end of August. EA Play is also available on PC via Origin, PS4, and Xbox One.

FIFA 08

FIFA 08 (named FIFA Soccer 08 in North America) is the 2007 installment of EA Sports' series of footballvideo games. Developed by EA Canada, it is published by Electronic Arts worldwide under the EA Sports label. It was released on all popular gaming formats in September 2007 in Europe, Australia, and Asia, and in October 2007 in North America. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game feature an improved game engine with superior graphics and different commentators and are dubbed "next-generation" by EA. On all other platforms—including the PC—the game utilizes an older engine. The Nintendo DS version features fewer teams, stadiums, game modes and kits due to the limitations of the machine's storage medium.

Commentary comes from Sky Sports' Martin Tyler and Andy Gray on next generation consoles. However, ITV Sport's Clive Tyldesley partners Gray on current generation consoles, and the PC version of the game. On the Nintendo DS version of the game, Tyldesley commentates solo. It also marks the first time the GameCube has been excluded from the FIFA lineup since FIFA 2001 and the first the original Xbox and Game Boy Advance has been excluded from the FIFA lineup since FIFA Football 2002.

The tagline for the game is "Can You FIFA 08?."[2] The theme song is "Sketches (20 Something Life)" by La Rocca, from the album The Truth.

New features[edit]

New features that were not in FIFA 07 include "Be a Pro Mode", where the player plays as only one player (the player can be changed) throughout the entire match.[2] However, this mode is not available for goalkeepers.

New features for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 include cooperative online play and a change of controls, which features the right stick as a way of selecting which player is to be on defense. However, this control setting can be changed back to the FIFA 07 configuration as well as other preset control configurations. In addition, the online mode has a new addition with interactive leagues, where players choose a league, a team, and play against real-life opponents. While not an entirely new feature, FIFA 08 includes new trick moves that can be used by using the right analog stick, which were, for the most part, absent in FIFA 07. In general, the speed of game also has decreased in FIFA 08.

In the PS2 version of the game, two new features were added. The first being goalkeeper AI, which meant when in a one-on-one situation with a forward and goalkeeper, one could push the right analog stick and have complete control of the goalkeeper. The second of these was when taking a free kick you were able to push the R3 (right stick) to lock the position of the ball, while you used the stick to determine exactly where you wanted the free kick to go. These were two features that have not been used in any FIFA games since, although many users and fans have expressed their feelings to see both or one make a welcome return.

Manager Mode[edit]

The Manager Mode on 08 has few enhancements from its predecessor, however, some of the new features include the chance to schedule training on certain dates, via the manager's calendar, and the option to play up to four pre-season friendlies.

Leagues and teams[edit]

FIFA 08 includes 621 licensed teams, 43 national teams, with 30 leagues[3] and more than 15,000 licensed players.[4] Several teams from other leagues also appear in a "Rest of World" category. Of the 621 teams that comprise the game, 29 appear unlicensed, 13 of them being national teams.[citation needed]

National teams[edit]

FIFA 08 has 44 teams in its international division. The most notable exclusion is Japan (who made it into the round of 16 in the 2002 World Cup, but whose licensing rights currently belong to Konami). The following international teams are playable in the current generation consoles. But not all the teams are fully licensed e.g. Netherlands and Spain.

Soundtrack[edit]

EA Sports officially announced FIFA 08s' soundtrack on September 11, 2007.[5] It featured many Latin music acts including Ivy Queen and Pacha Massive.[6]

Reception[edit]

The PlayStation 2 version of FIFA 08 received a "Double Platinum" sales award from the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA),[7] indicating sales of at least 600,000 copies in the United Kingdom.[8] ELSPA gave the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases each a "Platinum" certification,[9] for sales of at least 300,000 copies per version in the region.[8]

The game was well-received, garnering an average of 81.5 on both next-generation consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3) because of its refreshing new game mechanics, which broke out from the series' criticised past record of not making much of an effort to innovate, instead adding what were often described by critics as "gimmicks".[citation needed]

Awards[edit]

In 2008, FIFA 08 was nominated for BAFTA Children's Kids Vote Award.[10]
